EMR Course

Program Information:

The Emergency Medical Responder Course includes 64 hours of classroom and lab instruction. The course is offered in the fall/spring months Upon successful completion of this course the student is eligible to sit for the National Registry and State Certification Examination at the EMR level. Those who complete the course are prepared to work as an entry-level EMR for ambulance services and fire departments statewide. This course is an entry level course that serves as a stepping stone to other Emergency Service certifications and licensure.

Entrance Requirements:

  • Candidates must apply for acceptance into the program prior to enrollment.
  • All applicants must be 16 years or older to apply.
  • Applicants must complete an online application and submit it prior to the end of the application deadline.

Background Check:

EMR students are not required to submit a background check because the EMR class does not include clinical shifts. However, it is important for EMR candidates to understand that a criminal history may preclude them from receiving a certification at the state or national level. Therefore, it is highly recommended that EMR candidates review their criminal history and visit with the Health Programs Coordinator at Gordon Cooper if they have any questions prior to applying to the program.

Immunizations:

EMR students are not required to provide an immunization history because this program does not attend clinical shifts. However, it is highly recommended that each candidate insure that their immunizations are up to date because many employers will require complete immunizations.

Volunteer Firefighters Grant:

A grant is available for volunteer firefighters. This grant covers the entire cost of the EMR course. To qualify for this grant you must work at a volunteer fire department and have permission from your fire chief to attend. You will need to provide a letter stating that you are a volunteer firefighter at a volunteer fire department and that the fire chief wished for you to attend the EMR course. This letter will need to be included in your application. ALL grant applications MUST be submitted two weeks prior to the start of the course in order to secure funding and obtain State grant approval.

Placement Testing:

The EMR program does not require placement testing for acceptance into the program. However, candidates with a reading level below the 10th grade level may struggle because the program requires a significant amount of reading.
