Professional Diesel Technician

Gordon Cooper Technology Center offers full time career pathways to high school juniors, seniors and adults. High School students are eligible to receive math credit for various career majors. Student courses are offered from 8:15 to 11:15 AM and 12:55 to 3:55 PM Monday through Friday. High school student can choose to attend either the AM or PM session, and adult students can choose AM, PM or both sessions. All students must be assessed before entering a career major.

The Heavy Diesel Service Technician program prepares students for a career in the medium- and heavy-duty truck repair industry whether or not a person has prior mechanical experience. The program is divided into three phases that may be completed in 12 months as an adult student going full time or 24 months if enrolled as a secondary student (senior in high school). The training includes both classroom study and training on current equipment with laboratory testing facilities.  A student internship is also available to some students who meet certain standards.  Students have the opportunity to participate in on-the-job training at the discretion of the instructor, after meeting certain standards.

The course has been evaluated by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and meets the industry standards as a medium- and heavy-duty truck program. This program has therefore been certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in the following areas: diesel engines, drive train, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronic, heating and air conditioning and preventative maintenance and inspection.
