Blue Zones Cooking Classes

The Blue Zones Project food guidelines are not complicated – emphasize plant-based sources of protein, use whole grains and minimally processed ingredients.

Blue Zones Project food guidelines are derived from a study of the world’s healthiest and longest-living people.

With the sponsorship of Avedis Foundation, Pottawatomie County is working toward becoming a Blue Zones Project Certified Community. In keeping with the goal of encouraging Shawnee area people to adopt a healthier lifestyle, Gordon Cooper Technology Center is offering four Blue Zones Project inspired cooking classes.

These sessions are more than cooking demonstrations. Students learn to prepare meals and then enjoy eating and sharing their creations. The cost of each class is $29.

International Experience class is Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 6-9 p.m. at the GCTC cooking classroom on the main Shawnee campus at Interstate 40 and Highway 18. Students can take their taste buds on a trip the Blue Zones way through Costa Rica, Italy, Greece, and more!

Healthy Snacks class is slated for 6-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18. Students learn to make healthy snacks such as mini-blueberry cheesecakes, fruity chocolate almond bark, brownies, muffins, and more!

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner class runs 6-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23 and teaches students how to make nutritious, delicious dishes appropriate for each meal of the day.

Family Favorites class is set 6-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30. Students take a tasty, yet healthy approach to corn chowder, red bean and sweet potato hash, chili and other foods to soothe the soul.
